Is it moral to manipulate, persuade and influence the job interview?
Competition for all UK jobs is at an all time high, in the past an average of 300 applicants applied for all advertised UK jobs. Since the recent world wide recession, employers have seen an increase in applicants for each advertised job role with a new average of 2000 applicants applying for each individual position, with a surprising increase in worldwide applications for UK jobs. “Unemployment will rise further in 2012, peaking at 2.85m in 2013 from 2.64m currently” says the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.
The evidence is clear; competition in all job sectors is growing not just from UK applicants but due to an increase in online technology, remote working and EU regulations, competition for UK jobs is coming from across the globe. Chris Delaney the author of ‘Influencing the Interview’ says “Candidates have to stand out during the job interview, they have to show what added value they can bring to the organisation and to survive they must learn how to influence the job interview.”
Age and experience doesn’t guarantee you a job. In the past employees relied on their experience and references to secure employment. These days the interview is king, how you perform in the interview is more important than a long list of qualifications, your employment history or even your age. Chris Ball, chief executive at The Age and Employment Network, says, “You really do have to be ready for anything in job interviews … you can always encounter ageism.”
An interview in 2012 is in essence a sale pitch, to outwit other applicants you need to use influential language and highly persuasive techniques to beat the competitive competition.
