Advance Your Job Interview Techniques #1

Focus on Delivery

A job interview is a communication sales pitch. Where job applicants go wrong in the job interview is they always concentrate on only their interview answers, the words they use, rather than the delivery style of interview answers.

Communication isn’t just words. Communication is created with tonality, volume, gestures, body language and facial expressions (plus much more) What you say is important but as any orator will try to impress on you is the power of how you say it, the packaging to the delivery of your job interview answer.

Create a strong job interview answer, then focus on the delivery style; say it with confidence, say it with purpose, say it with emotion.

Advance Your Job Interview Techniques #2

Create a dialogue

An interactive interview creates rapport, increases likability and becomes more memorable

Failed interviewees will reflect and realise that they couldn’t stop talking. Their waffled answer turn the interviewer off, creating disinterest. To have a real impact in the job interview, talk less, ask more questions and create beautiful dialogue.

When asked a question give a string answer (focusing on your delivery style) and follow up by asking the job interviewer a question, relating to the question they asked you. As an example, if they asked you about your knowledge on a certain ICT system, ask them if they know about a new time-saving ICT system.

This style of interviewing is advanced and creates positive interaction. The interviewer, having a break from the normal interview style that they have heard for the past 2 days, creates a memorable job interview.

Key the glass half full…always

Time and time again when I deliver interview coaching sessions, clients tell me, how in the job interview they discuss sector problems, barriers and mistakes. I can never understand this perspective.

The job interview is the one place where you need the glass to be half full, no, over spilling with punitiveness. Explain your successes, show enthusiasm for your sector, answer problem questions with the frame of enjoyment – you enjoy solving problems.

Whatever you do in the job interview, do it with a smile, with positiveness and enthusiasm.

How to Use the Psychology of Attraction in a Job Interview

How to Use the Psychology of Attraction in a Job Interview

Attraction isn’t simple physical attraction as confidence, perceived power and how you communicate creates a primal animal magnetism.

An interviewer may find you attractive (which increases the chance of being hired) but attraction can come in the form of wanting to work with an individual, being attracted by the contacts someone will bring to the organisation or being attracted to someone work ethic and personality.

The truth is, if you are seen as attractive in any form, you create desire and desire leads to job offers. Here are 3 ways to use the psychology of attraction to land a job offer

 Find the Interviewer Attractive

We are pre-programmed to find people who find us attractive, attractive

A little flirt or flattery in the job interview can go a long way. We all like to be seen as attractive and when a stranger shows interest in you it feels good. This positive feeling is then associated to you the interviewee.

Play this card cleverly as this technique can go horrible wrong when taken to the extreme.

Attractive Body Language

Your posture, gesture and body language create rapport, likability and attractiveness in the job interview environment.

Open body language, as well as playing with hair, open palms and a tilt of the neck is seen as attractive and says “I’m interested”

Confidence and confident posture is one of the easiest ways to create attraction. We are all attracted to confidence, we respond automatically to authority and we seek confirmation from experts.

Most people are sheep, when we find a Sheppard we will follow their orders, this power doubles the attraction.

Throughout the job interview create a persona of power, become a master, authority and expert.Interview questions and answers

Emotionally Attractive

When watching films and theater productions  we get carried away with the performance because they stir emotions inside of us. BY creating an emotional response with the interviewer they will sense a feeling of attraction to you.

To create an emotional attraction use emotional powered words, make points using stories (as stories create emotional pictures in the minds eye)  and encourage the interviewer to speak about successes.

When someone speaks or hears emotional content, this creates a feeling, it is this same positive feeling the becomes associated to you, creating job interview attraction.

How Persuasive Interviewees Get There Point Across

Persuasive Interviewees

The job interview is all about getting your point of view across.

The successful job interviewee can persuade, influence and manipulate  the interviewer so they are seen as the ideal candidate to offer the job too.

This doesn’t mean you have to lie, instead it means that to be successful in a job interview you need to learn the key skills persuasive people use to get there point across.

The Listen and Repeat Method

To persuade a stranger, your interviewer you need to know what they value, what makes them tick, what criteria (skills, experience, work ethic) is important to them.

If you answer you interview questions quoting facts and examples that they deem important they will not only listen to you more intently bit they will build rapport with you.

Often the unsuccessful interviewee doesn’t understand why they didn’t get offered the position.

Throughout the interview they answered all the questions, gave examples and smiled. The problem is not everyone thinks that things you deem important, are important to them.

If I was going to sell you a holiday, I could discuss the sandy beeches where you can relax, the pool where you can chill out, the quite restaurants where you can eat peacefully. Sounds nice? Not if your looking for a holiday adventure, with actives everyday and dangerous around each corner.

To persuade in the job interview listen to what the interviewer discusses, pick up if they are a goal setter or problem solver, if they value profit over quality, if the preference staff with creativity or a rule follower. Once you understand what the employer values you can quote this during the job interview, making all your interview answers more relevant

Saying Little, Can Say a Lot

The nervousness interviewee is known to chatter on.

An over-talker not only confuses the interviewer but lets slip their weaknesses. By having a structure to your interview answer will keep you on point. You can open by stating how you have the desired criteria and follow this up with an example.

During the example you want to add a little intrigue, as this will get the interviewer asking you questions.

By getting the interviewer to ask you questions helps not only build rapport but gets them seeing you as an authority. You back up what you are saying with facts and figures, and even ask the interviewer their opinion, turning the interview into a conversation.

This is how people persuade with conversation by getting you to ask them, the persuader, to talk more.

Always end your original answer with intrigue, allowing the interviewer an opportunity to  ask you questions

Find Common Ground

The key to interview success is likability

People are more easily persuaded when they like you.

This is why the listen and repeat rule is key. If the interviewer is talking about goals and objectives and you, with enthusiasm, join in the conversation, stating how having goals, milestones and objectives motivates you to be your best you will both find a connection.

It doesn’t even matter what the common ground is as long as you can find something that makes the interviewer connect to you.

3 Key Things You Must Remember About Job Interviews

What You Must Remember About Job Interviews

I work with a lot of clients who fear the job interview.

It is this anxiety that ruins their job interview performance, resulting in another, often less skilled, applicant receiving the job offer. Often it’s  not the best suited interviewee who is successful, rather its the person who impresses in the interview that receives the job offer.

In the job interview you need to be on your A-Game. There are 3 things that you must remember about the job interview, 3 things that will help you feel more at ease, increasing your interview confidence.

It is rare that the interviewer is trained to interview

The first thing to remember about the job interview is that the interviewer is just as nervous as you are.

We become anxious when we are in unfamiliar territory. In most cases the job interviewer hasn’t been trained to interview applicants. Because they don’t want to be seen as weak, they will try to mask their nervousness in the interview itself. But by knowing that they are just as anxious as you are will help you feel more confident.

Due to the lack of interview experience for most interviewers, you need to ensure that they hear and record all your key selling points. Use repetition for this. Throughout the interview give several examples of using your key skill/selling point to make the point clear – if you hire me I will do X for you.

Likability Influences

People who have a likable personality or more likely to be offered the job.

During the job interview you need to build rapport, find common ground and use intrigue and stories to create a likable and remember-able job interview.

It simple isn’t good enough to have 10 years experience, the employer is looking for someone with experience but also someone they believe will fit well within the team and someone with good work ethic.

Interview questions and answers

If you have it, say it

When  explaining what you can offer in terms of skills, qualities and experiences you need to state everything in detail.

So many failed interviewees skip over key criteria because they see it as an everyday task. It is these everyday task that the new employer require you to complete.

Remember they don’t know, they have never meet you and they have no idea of what your daily task are.

The employer wants to hire someone who can hit the ground running. Explain all the daily task, and then add on your unique selling point.

Most interviewers use a point system. If you say X, Y and Z you get full points. If you miss one out your points are reduced. The more you say the more they will know what you can bring to the team.

5 Influence Styles You Can Use in a Job Interview

5 ways to influence the interview outcome

You are influenced every day, thousands of times, and you probably aren’t aware of 90% of them.

We are influenced by images, words, social proof, repetitive slogans, scarcity and by a number of other things. People influence each other with tonality, gestures, commitment and their style of communication.  the power of influence has a massive effect on your day with you buying goods, voting for politicians and making choices because of the power of influence and psychology.

These same psychological tactics can be employed in the job interview, giving you the upper hand. Here are 5 different influencing styles you can adopt in your next job interview.

 Assertiveness

We respond to authority.

By being seen as an authority in your sector you will gain compliance from the interviewer. Being assertive, stating, insisting that your ideas and suggestions will have a positive outcome once employed people to your authority.

Most of us are sheep and like to be sheep. Being a commanding Sheppard, herd the interviewer(s) to the pen of your choosing.

 Convincing

The best salespeople convince us that their product is the best product, even if it means spending a little more.

Put forward your ideas and offer logical, rational reasons to convince the job interviewer of your point of perspective. Once the interviewer is won over with one idea they are more likely to agree to other ideas due to the psychological law of compliance. This is why great salespeople not only sell one good, they also up-sell to their customers

Negotiation

An interview is a two-way conversation.

As with all debates, there are two sides to every story. If the interviewee states one fact, suggestion or idea and the interview has another viewpoint you can easily create friction, even fall out.

The secret to winning people over is negotiation. Look for compromises and find the middle ground

Relationship Building

A great communicator is someone who can build strong relationships with a complete stranger.

Nowhere is this more important than the job interview situation. Use common interest, your tone, facial expressions, body language, everything to build rapport. People will often favor people more that they like. This means that your interview answers will gain more points if the interviewer likes you as a person, compared to someone who takes an initial dislike.

Inspire Imagination

Humans are goal setters.

Often interviewees talk about past successes – this is good to a point. To really influence the interview, explain how your skills and past experiences will make an impact in the future within their organisation. Find future possibilities that will inspire the interviewer, show them how you will increase profit, create new business and save on overheads. Give them a positive future vision.

3 Sales Communication Techniques That Will Boost Your Interview Performance

Use Sales Techniques to Boost Your Interview Performance

The job interview is a 45-minute sales pitch

Possessing the art of sales is key to interview success. The better you sell yourself the more employable you will become. Many career professionals possess the experience and skills required for the position and should be offered the job role, but their lack of sales communication techniques let them down.

Set Up Your Own Coaching Business

Job Interview Sales Communication Technique 1

Speak up to show your confidence

Lesson one in sales is confident communication. What you say and more importantly how you say creates influence.

You will never persuade anyone if you mumble, stutter or speak in quiet tones.

Instead, pick power words – what you say creates an emotional impact. Use tone, projection and talk with gestures and facial expressions to communicate with confidence.

Over two-thirds of communication is non-verbal, this is why you need your tone to create a strong emotional response, increase volume to keep interested and say it with passion.

Job Interview Sales Communication Technique 2

Keep on point

Often salespeople lose a customer as they naturally go off point talking about criteria that don’t interest the customer.

In the job interview keep in mind the desired criteria for the position you are applying for. With this objective in mind, think before you speak and choose examples that relate to both the asked question and the desired criteria.

Also, use the power of three. Keep each sales point to three significant specific items “I’m a strong team player for three key reasons, one…”

Interview questions and answers

Job Interview Sales Communication Technique 3

Use a story

Stories, as all salespeople know, have a strong emotional impact and it’s emotional impact that creates desire.

To have the best impact with your interview answers, use a story rather than just giving specifics. Open with intrigue as suspense increases the interviewer listing to you. Explain the situation and goal, and give a detailed description of how you achieved the objective

Why Did You Leave Your Last Position?

When any negative put interview questions including “why did you leave your last position?” you need to re-frame your answer to a positive, focusing on your career prospects and your skill base.

Interview Q&A Tutorial – why did you leave your last position?

Interview Question “Why did you leave your last position?”

Be positive with this answer and smile – employers like to hear that you left for a good opportunity or reason, a chance to do something special or for a good career move.

  • Start the answer with a look back
  • Explain what you enjoyed about your previous role
  • Give a Positive reason for leaving

Example Interview Answer

“I enjoyed working at Company Name and really enjoyed the interaction of working with a wide range of individuals-I feel I gained a lot of transferrable skills from this experience, which I can use in this role. It was a hard choice to leave but I felt that this great opportunity is the next obvious step for me”

3 Steps to Successfully Sell You in the Job Interview

There is a simple process in any sales technique that increases the amount you sell to customers and this same technique can be used in the job interview.

First you need to know your customer – in our case the interviewer. Then you have to uncover their needs/wants and finally explain how the product (in the job interview you are the product) will match their needs

Rapport – Needs – Match

Step 1 Build Rapport and Get to know the Interviewer

The more you understand the interviewers personality trait, their values, work ethic, what motivates and stresses them, the way they approach task, if they are goal ordinated or problem solvers, their management style and the traits they deem important in an employee the better you can sell to them.

  • Check the employers linked in profile
  • Ask questions at the interview start to undercover their values
  • Listen to the language they use as this uncovers their personality and motivational traits

People like people who are like themselves. If you show that you have a similar work ethic, approach to task and motivational traits you will build instant rapport.

To build on this rapport, mirror the interviewers body language, gestures and speech as research has shown has this increases likeness.

Step 2 Uncovering the Employers Needs

Uncovering the employers needs is the key to interview success. Once you know what they require you can offer it up to them on a silver platter.

The technique to uncover their needs is simple – ask them!

At the interview start when the employer is asking opening questions to put you at ease, explaining the company vision to inspire you and as the interviewer walks you to the interview meeting room, find a suitable opportunity and ask the interviewer “what type of person they are looking to recruit”

Interviewers will happily release this information as they want to find the best match. Once know all you have to do is explain how you have these traits and skills

Step 3 A Full Platter

Your competition will sell themselves throughout the job interview.

To sell effectively you have to frame your answers by discussing the perspective the buyer (interviewer) is interested in.

Using the rule of 7, mention how you can deliver and meet their needs throughout all your interview answers, discussing your unique selling point at least 7 times during the interview.

Familiarity sells – by discussing the same successful point in a variety of ways throughout the interview the interviewer will associate this key selling point (how you meet their needs) with your interview.
