Can You Use White Lies on a CV?

First a WARNING, white lies are fine, but be careful as employers have a legal right to dismiss employees who lie on their applications/resumes. But we all make white lies, and a tweak here and there on your resume can be the difference between you receiving that all important interview offer or not.

The Job Title Killer?

Companies are very creative with their job titles; the problem here is that one business may use a term (or job title) that another doesn’t.

When applying for a new position, you may record the job title used in your current job that might be misunderstood by the new employer.

Remember many employers will initial skim through your resume, checking if you have the relevant experience, if they wrongly believe that your creative job title is a different job to the one you are applying for, you may be quickly dismiss from the interview list. Examples of this are “Planner” or “Landscape Architect” “janitor” or “Sanitation Engineer”

Close the Gap.

Delete the months and only leave the years in your employment history section as this deletes any short periods of unemployment. Employers will just presume you haven’t been unemployed.

Words Have Power.

The words you hear have different representations, even though the word itself has the same meaning. In the Resume you need to use power words, as power words will create the overall stronger impression, from the employer perspective.

Which sentence sounds the best? “A good team player” or “an excellent team player” both sentences have the same meaning, but the second sentence sounds stronger by replacing one word. Go through your resume and edit the words, until you create the best overall impression.

STEM Careers are Flying…into Space

Career sector are rapidly changing, with high skilled jobs on the increase and low skilled careers on the decline.

We are living in the digital age, and this is being represented in the job market.

Employers are on the look out for STEM professionals (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) and the potential jobs opportunities range from the entertainment industry recruiting game designers to sound engineers, to the energy and environmental sector who are developing new energy sources from wind, sun and wave power.

spacecraft

STEM jobs cover many job sectors. One growth area is the Space sector, where the UK alone are predicting to create over 100,000 space jobs, to work on satellites,  global positioning systems and military surveillance. The potential in this sector is massive, with private companies funding research that only a couple of years ago would have been funded by governments.

Two examples of this include, the Google Lunar Price where Google have offered a prize of $30m for the first private team to land a robot on the moon. And billionaire Dennis Tito is funding a married couple to go on a 500 day space mission to fly around Mars.

Future Job in STEM

The truth is we don’t know what jobs people will be employed to do in the next 20 or 30 years, maybe new industries such as the space holiday sector will be commonplace or organ growing farms will remove the need for donor list.

What we do know is that STEM skilled employees will be required to move the world forward. We have never lived in a time where developments are changing at this rapid rate, only a few years ago a phone was used as a phone, the idea that you  access the internet, complete bank transactions and create music tracks from your phone would have been unbelievable.

Innovators, scientist, mathematicians, doctors, engineers, designers and soft and hardware developers are creating new inventions that are shaping our future, and as a STEM professional you could be part of these teams.

  • Creating a renewable energy source from wave power
  • Curing Cancer
  • Mining minerals from distant planets
  • Creating crops that grow in areas struck by poverty
  • Designing self driving cars to reduce accidents

Future Growth of Careers

  • The Low Carbon Sector, supporting Green Collar Jobs is due to double in the next 3-4 years
  • The space sector is a £40 billion business creating over 100,000 jobs
  • Digital and Creative industry is growing rapidly at a 5% increase in jobs
  • £1 Billion investment in the Life Science sector is employing over 400,000 people and could double over the next 5 years
  • Increases in air travel, space exploration, innovative renewable energy schemes, advances in microelectronics and science has boosted STEM jobs, future careers and new opportunities.

Should I Retrain in ITC?

When looking to re-train into the IT sector you need to be full aware of the growth of this sector, because so many career professional retrain only to find that during their education the sector has moved on and their desired career is no longer available.

man in a creative search

The computer sector is growing, rapidly. New and upcoming computer jobs include;

Mobile App Developer

– this is a key sector, only recently a teenager in his last year at school sold a mobile app to Yahoo worth millions.

Software Engineers.

The increase in online technology has boosted this job sector with inventions such as the cloud. If your creative and logical this sector will suit you.

Game Designer

jobs are predicted to grow by 5% over the next 4 years. Graphics’ and online gaming has made this sector more profitable then films. The success for gaming has been so high that companies use film like adverts to increase sales.

Can Hypnotic Language Patterns Really Be used in Job Interviews?

Milton Erickson is often referred to as the father of modern hypnotherapy, and his use of ambiguous language can be used in the job interview, to direct the interviewers frame of mind.

richaed bandler langugae patterns

Before Erickson, often hypnotherapist would use an authority style of hypnosis to hypnotise their patient “You will fall into a deep sleep” obviously this style of hypnotising doesn’t go down to well in the job interview.

In fact you don’t want to hypnotise the interviewer, in such a way that they fall into a deep trance, you want to direct the interviewers unconscious to think about you in such a way that they feel completed to offer you the job.

There are many hypnotic language patterns that you can use in the job interview, and you will learn a few of them here today. The great thing about Milton Erickson’s style of hypnosis is that your subject (the interviewer) won’t realise that you are leading them.

The Bind, links two ideas together

  • The more we discuss this project, the more you will realise how I can get the same results for you”…

The Double Bind, creates an illusion of choice, but the end result for both choice is the same

  • “Hear you go, if you want you can read the whole CV or you can skip down to my previous job where I have highlighted by successes”…

Presuppositions, Presupposition of time, it’s not if, it’s when

  • When you hire me, I will bring across my list of client contacts…”

Embedded Commands, the order (command) comes across unnoticed

  • When you hire me, you will know you have made the right decision because…

Cause – Effect patterns, A means B

  • Now we have met, you can imagine how well we can work together

Now, some of these patterns may sound strange or illogical because what most people aren’t aware of is that language when spoken is fluid, which means the patterns above may not be grammatically correct but when spoken in a conversation they come across naturally which means that your commands and suggestion such as “hire me” “read the whole CV” “Imagine how well we can work together” go unnoticed, the interviewer will simply visualise you doing these commands because words create images, and if your interviewers image are positive about you, you will get offered the job.

How many patterns did you spot in this one paragraph?

7 Unbelievable but Absolutely True Interview Fails

Beware!!! These interview fails can happen to you, learn from their mistakes and prepare for interview success.

Scared to Death

nervous2

You have to agree that the job interview is one on the scariest situations you can put yourself in. Interviewers will often feedback that nervous interviewees constantly sweat, tremble and shake.

But for one 17yr old interviewee, having the interview shakes was a life saver. This young nervous interviewee thought nerves had gotten the better of him; he started to shake prior to the interview, in the interviewee, the shakes got worst, so bad the interviewer started to become concerned.

He shook so much throughout the interview, that he was rushed to hospital, later to find that he had a massive Brain Tumour. Shaken Stevens eat your heart out, read how this amazing but terrifying interview saved his life.

iPhone Owner Make The Worse Employees

iphone

A crazy company rejected a job applicant for owning an iPhone. The interviewer spotted the interviewee in the waiting area accessing his iPhone.

The crazy employer wasn’t concern that the applicant had a phone in his hand; he was disappointed that it was an iPhone saying “Students who have iPhones don’t work. Everything you have was bought by your parents. You haven’t bought anything by working yourself. You are wealthy and can’t stand the stress. Working at our company is tough. It calls for someone who can take the pain and suffering.”

Slow Worker for Fast Food Joint

mcdonalds

An American student went for a job interview in the famous fast food chain McDonalds, famous for its Big Mac and speedy service, with this in mind the interviewee didn’t understand the importance of matching the employers criteria, answering one question by saying “speed in the workplace wasn’t his strongest point.”

Finally, the interview was lost when he followed this damaging statement up by telling the employer how he wanted to be an English teacher, not a fast food worker and finally topped the interview off by stating that he could only work certain days.

Cat Kills the Interview

cat scratch

Telephone interviews are great, you don’t have to get up early, you don’t have to shave and you don’t even have to get dressed. You do have to remain professional….and lock your pets up. During a phone interview with RBS, the interviewee was set a complex maths question, while the interviewer listens on the other end of the phone.

Surprised, the interviewer heard, “You f*cking c*nt!” shouted down the phone by the applicant. Shocked the interviewer hung up the phone, ending the interview.

What the interviewee couldn’t see was the actual cause of the outburst, the interviewees cat had crept up a clawed her leg, which was the real reason for the outburst, not the complex interview question.

Murder Arrested at the Job Interview

arrested

No matter how much experience and skills you have, one sure way to guarantee that you won’t receive a job offer during a job interview is when you get arrested for murder.

An unnamed girl accused of murdering two young men, was wanted by police who could not locate her, but they knew that the girl had a job interview due and waited for the girl to attend the job interview before arresting her – to the surprise of the interviewees

The Heineken Interview

heineken

How would you react if your interview started by the interviewer wanting to hold your hand, crazy I know, later after a couple of general interview questions the interview stands up and faints. You get up to help him, only then the fire alarm goes off.

As your led outside a team of firemen are trying to get a stuck potential co-worker to jump out of the window onto the safety net, but there’s not enough fireman to hold the net, what would you do? Help out, watch or just go home? This is one of the best but bizarre job interviews ever.

Interviewer Eats his Dinner In the Interview

Good interviewees know the signs of when the interviewer is getting bored, but none have been this obvious.

Luke went to the interview unprepared, the interviewer quickly realised this and became quickly bored of the interview. After a couple of interview questions and to the surprise of Luke, the interviewer put his feet up on the desk and started to eat his lunch, if that wasn’t bad a couple of minutes later and half way through a sandwich, the interviewer ask “you’re still here?”

Being a Nanny Can Be More Rewarding than Merely a Paycheck

This months guest post comes from Jack Meyers a regular contributor for www.nannybackgroundcheck.com

There is more to being a nanny than just monitoring a child to make sure he or she doesn’t get into the cookie jar nor does something to get injured. A nanny needs to be a role-model for the child that can provide a positive influence in his or her life. The position requires a deeper level of caring than simply watching over the house. This level of expertise, caring, and interaction are reasons why nannies are paid far better than simple babysitters.

1. Adaptation – Obviously, a nanny loves to work with children. If you are unable to handle any situation that arises while caring for a child, then you should seek a different career. This isn’t saying that you need to know everything that is going to happen, but you need to be able to adapt to situations quickly. Anything can happen inside of 30 seconds with a child, good or bad.

2. Experience – Having previous experience caring for children in various settings is always a good thing to have on your resume. Educational, therapeutic, or pediatric experience could quickly hurl you into the front of the line. For those who lack experience and are looking to start their career as a nanny, jobs like babysitting or daycare can help.

3. Caring – You need to be able to care on a deeper level as a nanny than most other positions. Although you’re not taking the place of a parental figure, the child needs nurturing from you in order to develop into a positive role-model themselves in life. You’ll need to be able to care for the child in a fashion that you would care for your own.

4. Background Skills – Experience in first aid and CPR for children is one of the most important skills to have. Although we try to protect the children as best we can, accidents do eventually happen. Parenting classes of any kind is a great way to add knowledge to your experience and looks great on a resume. Many of these classes are provided by your local family care clinic for free. While it may be beneficial to take childhood development courses in college or obtain a degree, successful nannies have been able to accomplish their goals without. Basically, the more knowledge you gain for the care of a child, the better off you’ll be in a career as a nanny.

5. Flexibility – Although many stations have a set schedule that you’ll be needed, it doesn’t hurt to be flexible in your hours. Especially if a child forms a bond with you, extra hours or irregular times may be necessary. For instance, a family may be more comfortable with you watching the child if an emergency happens in the middle of the night.

6. Confidentiality – A family’s privacy needs to remain just that. In no manner of speaking is it ever OK to talk about your employer’s habits or lifestyle. The only time that confidentiality should take a back-seat is if there is illegal activity in the house or situations that put the child at risk. It’s no one’s business what goes on within the home you are stationed.

It takes a special kind of person to be a great nanny. It’s not some laid-back position that you can milk for a paycheck. It requires a greater interpersonal connection with a child in order to assist in his or her development. You have to work with the child, not because of them.

Two Key Rules to Passing Recruitment Interviews

The recruitment interview various from that of the standard job interview, which means you need to prepare differently. Recruitment agencies will either interview you for a specific position in which case you need to prepare and answer the interview questions as you would in any interview, as the recruitment agency will only put the best candidates forward as this is how they make there profit.

In many situations though, recruitment agencies will interview you to put you on their books, a great selling point to the employer “we have 5000 candidates ready to start work.” Recruiters will also question you about other positions you have applied for, which they then use as a lead to generate them, not you more business.

Rule One

As with any interview you need to sell yourself and the best way to sell yourself in the interview is by matching yourself to the job specification. In the recruitment interview use a little psychology and persuasive language, to uncover exactly what positions are available. This will need a little preparing beforehand.

At the interview start by taking control, “thank you for inviting me down today your agency has a great reputation (praise goes a long way), can I check what current positions are you looking to recruit for?” you may be given a general answer “oh, erm we have lots of finance positions available all over the northwest” when given general answers, chunk down for more detail “that’s wonderful, I have over 10 years experience in finance, what type of businesses are you recruiting on behalf for, banks? Small enterprises, government organisations?

Now they have to give you detail or look stupid, if they say “Hmm I don’t Know” they probably haven’t any vacancies and are looking for leads from you (yes this does happen..alot) with this I would say “OK, well if your not sure who you are recruiting for how do you know if I will be the correct candidate?” you can either leave at this point or use the interview as a practice interview, as it is unlikely that there is a real job.

If they answer with detail “we have several banks that we are currently recruiting for” you can use this to answer the following interview questions relating your experience to the skills required for the banking industry.

The idea is to get as much detail in your initial questions so you can target your answers, as the recruitment agency will then match you to the specific job, rather then having a general interview to check your skills.

Rule Two

The final part of the interview is to highlight to the recruitment agency how they can quickly make a profit out of you, which is their ultimate aim. Drop in to the interview at some point, how you always secure job offers at interviews, because employers recognise a key (skill, experience, qualification) of yours, you can even joke with the interviewer that this will be an easy sell for them. Remember some agencies don’t specialise in your industry they are recruited to shift the applicants, which means that they don’t always know the job role in-depth, only what is recorded on the employers job advert.

If they believe you will get the job at the employers interview, they will quickly let you pass there shifting interview, knowing that you will be recruited. Remember in many cases the recruitment agency is the gatekeeper to the real industry interview.
