You can use NLP techniques to write and improve your CV; the techniques you will learn today are simple, effective and are often NOT used by other job hunter’s which means you will have the upper hand on job applications.

We recently delivered an Interview Techniques Training Course using NLP techniques to secure you more job offers. During the course I was asked about using NLP on your CV and thought I would write this article to help you improve your CV

Today you will learn about influencing language and anticipation loops, but more on that later.

  • What doesn’t work?

Well, first if you are applying for a large number of vacancies with your current CV for positions you know you can do and you aren’t securing job interviews then you need to change your CV, as we say in NLP “if you want a different result, do something different” as a good CV is a CV that secures you job interviews.

Thinking about NLP, I would stay away from using hypnotic language patterns from the Milton Model technique, as these suggestive language patterns are to vague for CV’s and wont really make sense to the employer.

  • The Power of CV Words

Words are powerful because each word has a different meaning and emotional attachment. Take these following statements, which statement has more power?

  • “I don’t like my job”
  • “I hate my job”
  • “I detest my job”

They all have the same outcome, but the wording has different emotional attachments, “detest” feels stronger or more emotional than “don’t like” this works for positive sentences to:

  • “I am a good team player”
  • “I am a great team player”
  • “I am an excellent team player”

Remember the words the employer reads on a CV helps them create an image of the person who wrote the CV, it is just the same as when you read a novel and the author describes a character, you quickly form an image of this character in your mind, from the words you read – the trick here is for this image to be powerful, the more powerful words you use the more powerful the image of you will be.

  • Employer Values

Now you understand the power of words, you can write your CV and then edit the words replacing weak words with powerful phrases, but what will really get you noticed is when you meet the employers Values and Beliefs.

When applying for any position, you will generally receive the initial job advert, followed by the job specification and you will also have access to the Company Website

By reading these documents and visiting the company website you can get a real feel of the company values and beliefs (some websites will even show you the company mission statement or list their core values)

Write down a list of company Values

Company Values example Company Values
  • Customer Satisfaction
  • Delivering exceptional value for our stake holders
  • Encouraging Creativity
  • Accountability
  • Consistency in Quality

If you know what values the company value, you can add these to your CV and Covering Letter, as an example:  “throughout all my roles I have had a consistency in the quality of my work” – you are now speaking the employer’s language

The job speciation will be full of company “key” words, ensure all the job skills and qualities especially from the “essential criteria” section are referenced on your CV and Covering Letter. Also don’t use abbreviations’ that are unknown to your future employer.

It’s like when you go and buy a car, nowadays most new cars run well and have air-con, stereos and electric winders etc. and you generally will have a car type in mind; sports car, family car, which matches your budget.

But instead of buying any new car, you will also have a list of criteria that you require; I want a Blue car and it need to have an IPOD holder or The care must be red with a big boot, you wont just except any car (even though they all run well and cost similar in petrol and tax) as you want a career that meets your criteria and this is true for employers they wont just take on anyone even though they have the experience needed, they will want to recruit someone with A, B and C criteria, which means you need to highlight you have A, B and C criteria on your CV and Cover Letter. We call this in NLP Matching and Mirroring

  • Anticipation – get the employer to want to know more

Why do TV soaps always end on a cliffhanger? Because you want to know what will happen next, so you tune in next week to find out. Imagine you could use the same anticipation on your CV; this would lead to an increase in job interviews as the employer will want to know more about you.

On your covering letter a CV use bold statements that sell your skills and experience without giving too much away, you want the employer to read your statements and think “wow that’s amazing – but how did they do that?” as an example one client I knew wrote “in my past three roles I have took over the management of underperforming restaurants on the verge of closer and within 12 months turn each of them around increasing profit to 125%”

Explain how you can easily complete the task on the job specification by giving real life examples, builds up the anticipation by keeping the example short and to the point, which also helps to keep your CV to the required two pages.

  • See it form the employer’s point of view

So, by now you have written your CV, change the wording to make it more powerful. You will have read the job specification and looked on the company website and used your research to edit your CV to match the language and the values the employer uses, making your CV even more targeted and personalised.

Finally you have added real life examples to match the required essential criteria without giving too much away adding anticipation loops.

Often people write the CV from their point view, recording what they want the employer to know about them and their achievements, we are generally proud of certain achievements and want other employers to know about them, but you need to ask yourself – are they relevant?. People can easily get caught up in their own view of world when writing a CV adding down the details of what they feel is important, not what the employer feels is important.

To add real value to your CV, clear your mind and imagine you are the employer (you can get an insight to the employer’s world through their website, linked-in profile and news articles), imagine you could see the world from the employer’s eyes, seeing what they could see, hearing what they could hear and feeling the emotions they feel. How do you act as the employer? What do you say? How do stand and tilt your head? Become aware of your gestures and body language? Notice how you – the employer would act and what you would say to yourself?

As the employer, ask yourself, what type of person do I want to employee? – write this down. What skills, qualities and experience do I require? Again write these down. What personality am I looking for in my new employee? What attitude, values and beliefs do I want this person to have?

By looking at the potential employee from your employer’s point of view will give you a better understanding of what the employer requires. Ensure you have described the side of you that matches the employer’s specification, record what skills, experience and qualifications the employer requires and don’t be tempted to record other achievements that are not relevant.

NLP techniques can help build up your interview confidence as described in The Secrets of Employment, with CV writing it is not about feeling confident it is about knowing what the employer requires and values in their employee, if you can match these few elements on your CV you will win more interviews.

Take your time and target each application; short term this is more work and I would add long term this work will pay off with an increase in job offers, this means if you cant be bothered targeting your applications use a CV writing service to target the applications for you.

Instant Confidence for Interviews and Presentations

 

Imagine you could instantly summon up the confidence to perform a skill of task to the very best of your ability.

 

If you had a technique that would allow you to access a resourceful state to overcome your fear of fear of public speaking, before a job interview or to give you he confidence to contribute during an important meeting; how would this technique benefit you?

 

Today you will learn how to access a resourceful state such as confidence, by using a famous NLP technique; The Circle of Excellence

 

The Circle of Excellence is an anchor whereby an imaginary circle is drawn on the floor, which is ‘stepped in-to’ to install new and additional resources relative to a situation where different behaviour or thinking is required

 

I have used this NLP technique to give people the confidence during job interviews, to perform well on stage, while giving presentations and help a sports person perform well during Olympic events

 

Confidence Coaching Sessions

 

This technique requires using your imagination and your ability to visualise events in your mind, when visualising events you will need to shut out the outside work and go deep into your unconscious mind, imagining you are there again, at the place you are visualising – this must feel real, like it does when you dream.

 

First read through the technique before completing it three times.

 

The Situation.  First think of a situation (interview, public speaking etc) when you would like to feel your best and most resourceful self. Draw an imaginary circle on the ground in front of you.  Make it a generous circle of about three feet in diameter. 

 

Relive Confidence.  Stand up and let yourself go back in your memory to a time when you were very confident, abundantly confident.  Go back to it strongly; see what you saw through your own eyes at the time, hear what you heard and even remember all the smells and taste that you smelt and tasted when you originally felt confident. Notice what you are feeling and how good it feels reliving that moment, feel that confident feeling rushing through your body; beware where the confident feeling starts and the direction it is heading, the speed the confident feeling moves at through your body and what the temperature of that feeling is.

 

In the Circle.  As you feel this confident building up, double it and step into the C.O.E.  What colour would you like the circle to be?  Would you like it to have a sound like a soft hum that indicates how powerful it is? What is your power sound like? How does it feel?  Are you feeling relaxed, excited, strong? How is your posture and breathing right now?  Notice the position of your feet and hands, the tilt of your head.  When the feeling of confidence is at its fullest, step out of the circle, leaving those positive confident feelings, colours and sounds inside the circle.

 

By being aware of your posture, your breathing, how relaxed you feel, where the confident feeling starts from in your body, the temperature of this feeling, what positive self talk you give yourself when you feel confident – you now understand which elements make you feel confident, this allows you to use this experience to re-access you confidence when needed by anchoring all these different confident elements to the COE, you will automatically access them when “stepping into the COE” without even having to think about it

Repeat the exercise with a second and third experience if you want to add further resourceful states to the circle or if the circle doesn’t feel strong enough.  Repeat as many times as necessary.  The circle is limitless and you can keep adding more confidence and power resources to the circle over time.

 

Selecting CuesNow think of a specific time in the future when you want to have that same feeling of super confidence.   Imagine yourself in this future event, see and hear what will be happening just before you want to feel confident.  How will the scene unfold?

 

What is the cue to knowing that it is nearly time to step into the C.E.O.?  It could be the opening of an office door or stepping onto a stage or being introduced to an audience…put the CEO in the place you need it to be so you can access your confident state; this could be in front of a microphone or the interview chair.

 

Step into the Circle of Excellence!  Feel the confidence there for you again, the colours, the sounds, the positive self talk, the confident breathing and posture.  Imagine the scene unfolding exactly the way you want it too, with you feeling extremely confident with all your confident feelings and resources fully available for you. Play this future event out fully with you acting at your best, see this future event from the eyes of the YOU in the future.

 

Check Results Now step out of the circle again, leaving those confident feelings there in the circle.  Outside the circle, take a moment and think again of that upcoming event or situation.  You’ll find you’ll automatically recall those confident feelings

This technique will help you achieve your goal, by breaking down your goal into realistic chunks. Also, by looking at the outcome of your goal and the resources you can access you will start to think about a future time when the outcome has been achieved and how this will make you feel and the changes this goal will bring.

Setting Your Career Goal  

  

First think of your career goal as a positive and state the career goal in the present tense; as an example if your goal is to “get out of the company I hate” you can change this to a positive “To find a new job in a company that will help me develop”

Be In Charge of Your Goal  

You need to take responability of your career goal, it is good to use other resources like asking a friend to check if their company have any vacancies, but you are fully responsible for achieving your career goal – it is only you who can make this goal a reality. 

  • How will you start it?
  • How will you maintain it (the activity)?
  • If anything, how might you stop the good work?
  • What could you do instead to continue making good progress?

Be Specific  

Your goal is the overview, now lets get specific. The smaller the details and information, the more achievible and real your goal becomes. As a motivational tool having smaller chunks of your goal recorded, makes it easier for you to move forward, by seeing yourself  each step along the way that you have achieved 

  • Where will you be when you start your goal?
  • When will you start working towards your goal?
  • How will you know you are moving forward?
  • What specifically will you be doing?
  • If you were doing this now, where are you? What can you see? What do you say to yourself? How do you keep going? How do you feel right now?
  • What would others say when they can see you achieving your goal? What will others see you doing?
Collect Evidence  

What is the outcome to achieving your goal? As we achieve the goals we set our-self we tend to find our lives move forward in more then just one way.

 

  • How will you know that the goal has been achieved?
  • What will be different? What will you see, hear and think when you have achieved your goal?
  • How will you know that your goal has lead to your desired outcome?

Resources  

Once you have a goal and desired outcome and you are motivated to achieve your goal and outcome, you may want to use some additional resources.
 

  • What resources do you have available that will help you to reach your goal?
  • Who do you know that may be able to help, support and encourage you?
  • What books, information, state of mind may help you achieve your outcome?
  • Who do you know that has achieved the same outcome?

Size Matters                                                                                                                 

Ask Yourself:

  • Is the outcome the right size?
  • Does the outcome seem realistic and achievable?
  • Does it represent enough of a challenge to keep you interested without it being so big that it feels overwhelming?
  • Does outcome look, sound, feel exciting enough to keep you motivated?

  • How do you feel when you have achieved your outcome?

Rapport

 

 

Rapport creates trust, helping us achieve our goal; getting a discount in a shop to passing a job interview. In NLP Rapport is defined as the establishment of trust, harmony and co-operation in a relationship.

Have you ever walked in to a room and you are instantly drawn to one group of people rather then another? This is because we like people who are similar to us.  

This can be conscious; you may go over to someone who is wearing a football shirt from the team you support or carrying a book from your favourite author. Similarity helps us break the ice and build rapport.

With your unconscious mind, you may be drawn to a group of people or an individual, without knowing why. This could be due to person(s) posture, body language and even the way they speak or dress.

When in rapport your conversation will feel “in the flow” or as Robert Dilts once said “a loop of mutual influence”

Building Rapport

 

We like people who seem familiar to us, who appear as we do. One way to increase rapport is to Match the other persons Posture.

While in conversation, match how the other person stands (creating a mirror effect) and copy their common gestures. Some NLP-ers will say Matching is a sign of rapport which is true and I would add to improve rapport matching body language and posture works really well.

Second listen to the person’s language and match their voice speed and tone – you can even match and build rapport over the phone.

Also, listen to the words the person uses, do they use Visual, Auditory or Kinaesthetic language? You can use a person’s language to gain rapport and influence them.

The Power of a Smile.

 

If you entered a room with two people stood in it and you had to choice one person to talk to, they both looked the same and had a similar posture, the only difference was one was smiling – who would you prefer to talk to?

Everyone is attracted more to someone who smiles, as a smile shows warmth, confidence, happiness and acceptance. During an interview where we all know first impressions count, if you walk into the room confidently with a big wide smile you will instantly be liked.

Listen.

 

There is a lot more to learn on rapport building to get people to like you and for you to be able to influence others, far too much for one article. So we will return to this again as the next rapport building article will hold some powerful secrets.

But before you go, I will teach you one last tactic – Listening. We have all hear the old saying “we have two ears and one mouth, we should listen twice as much as we talk” this is very true.

Start a conversation by asking a question, as the other person talks keep listening and nod throughout the conversation. This will increase Rapport especially when you match their body language.

Listening builds rapport, by listening instead of interrupting with your own thoughts; it shows the other person the conversation is about them not you.

Future Pace.

You can even take this one step further; after listening to the other person build up and expand on what they have said, showing you have further knowledge and expertise. If possible add an idea/suggestion they have not thought of.

This technique, when learnt can be used to influence others, you can already think of ways this technique can improve your interview techniques.

As an example, many interviewers will tell you about a new contract they have won (the reason they are recruiting – as an example building FLT engines), as you sit their, smile, nod and listen-building up rapport. As the interviewer finishes, tell them how great it is to win a contract in these competitive times, and how (add in a further knowledge) the company could also use the engineers to delivery on site maintenance and breakdown repairs, as this would not increase overheads and pays well.

It doesn’t matter if the company will take on this idea, it shows you have knowledge in their sector and can think out of the box, plus your first goal was to establish excellent rapport which you have easily done, now all you have to do is answer the other interview questions positively and wait for your job offer.

Be At Your Very Best In Every Job Interview – Interview Confidence

Using NLP, the study of Human Excellence, this article will help you be at your very best during every job interview. Imagine you could perform at your optimum during all your future interviews, how would this increase the amount of job offers you receive? How confident would you feel knowing you are at your very best?

These techniques are powerful, to gain a full understanding you will need to commit to practicing them, I would also add for many, NLP techniques will be new and as you read the technique you will not be aware of the power of the technique until you practice the technique for real.

Give a Description.

Grab a pad of paper and a pen and write a description of how you would perform in an interview where you felt highly confident. Start with how you look, what you are wearing, how do you walk, what does your posture look like, are you carrying anything? Do you look relaxed? Calm? Confident?

How do you act, do you start conversations, what are you doing with your hands, do you pay attention to other people in the waiting or interview room? Write it all down “I feel…I  act…I see myself…”

How do you sound when your answering interview questions, write down your tone of voice, the speed you are speaking at, do you sound confident? In charge? Professional?

Write lots of detail, don’t just think it, write it down!                                  

What does your Best Look and Feel like?                                              

To become your best in every interview, you need to know what your best looks and feels like, close your eyes and imagine if you were at an interview performing to your very best. See yourself now; you look and feel great imagine you knew how to word your answers and see an air of confidence surrounding you, as you are being interviewed.

As you see yourself in your minds eye notice the way this confident version of you acts, notice your positive posture and listen to the tone of your voice. Become aware of everything that makes this new you feel good, how do you walk? Is your head held high or looking down? Is your handshake firm or soft? Do you look and sound like you belong there? Imagine you could smell the confidence of this new you, what does your confidence smell like?

Imagine if you could step out of your body, and float across to the body of this new confident you, step into your new body and see the world from the eyes of a confident you. Notice the confident feeling running strongly through your body, where does it start from? Which direction does it spread in? What is the speed? Is the confident feeling warm or cold? Fast or slow?  Become aware of what makes you feel confident right now. If you could give the confident feeling a colour, what colour would it be? If you could double the intensity of the colour, how much more confident does this make you feel?

Become aware of your posture, how you hold your head, your shoulders and how confidently you walk. What positive thoughts do you say to yourself as you feel confident? What else makes you feel confident? What could make you feel more confident?

Now you have already started to feel more confident, as you repeat this exercise two more times you will notice the confident and positive feelings becoming stronger more quickly.

Set up an Interview Anchor.

As you completed the last two exercises you would have started to feel more confident, this is because when you think about feeling confident you start to become confident. If you could access these confident and positive feelings before an interview, how would this increase your chances of passing the interview? You already know it would, think about feeling confident at an interview – you probably accessed these emotion really quickly this time.

When would it be useful for you to access your instant confident feelings (we will call this the trigger) for an interview? When you walk into the reception? When you shake the interviewer’s hand? When you take your coat off? At what point in the interview or lead up to an interview would you want to access instant interview confidence?

Remember when we asked where does your confident feeling come from? Think about that now, the start of your confident emotion. Many others say their confident feeling starts in their stomach, so we will use this as the example.

Think about the feeling in your stomach, the colour and speed you gave it and the direction it travels in.   Now think about your trigger, did you pick taking your coat off, shaking the interviewers hand or anything else? What ever you picked imagine doing that action now in slow motion, as you think about this trigger also think about the confident feeling starting in your stomach and spreading in slow motion around your body. Do this 8-10 times thinking about the trigger and emotion at the same time, each time make this happen faster and faster until it seems like they naturally happen at the same time, instantly.

Some people prefer to use an NLP Coach to help them master these confident building techniques.

By reprogramming your brain you can access positive feelings to any trigger, giving you in this case instant confidence during your interview. There are many other techniques to help reduce interview fears and increase confidence, keep a look out for upcoming blog articles.

Motivating Your Team – Towards and Away From Motivation

When learning about motivation one of the first lessons you will learn is about “Towards or Away From” Motivation, also known as “Pain or Pleasure” Motivation.

This article will help you understand why people are motivated by Towards or Away From language, how to know who is motivated by which motivation preference and which language you can use to motivate both Towards and Away From Motivated People. 

NLP-Meta Model

NLP is the study of excellence, one part of NLP is the Meta Model (this helps us understand how people input, sort and filter information) The Meta Model has helped us learn how language has different effects on different people.  As you may be motivated by the Carrot, others are motivated by the Stick.

Motivation

If you could know which language would motivate your team would you want to learn it? Helping your team achieve all of its goals, moving towards a successful year with a new positive team, knowing each year would bring in better results, is this something you could use to benefit future team moral?

If you could speak to your team, knowing the language that would stop your team from being unmotivated, reducing common errors and to stop the team from wasting time. Would this knowledge move you away from poor results?

It’s not about who is motivated by what language, as we are all individuals, it’s about how you can use language to motivate your team, if you new how to motivate your team, what would you different when you returned to work on Monday morning?

How to know who is motivated by what language?

Ask your staff members “What’s important to you in work?”

They will often give you a list of criteria, example: Training, Reviews, Good Atmosphere, Big Wage, My Own Desk, etc

Secondly ask “why is Criteria important to you?” what ever answer they give, ask “why is this new criteria important to you?”

Listen to their answer: do they use Towards or Away From Language?

Example from a Social Worker Review:

 

Manager “what is important to you in work?”

Staff“erm, I need to know that I am helping other people”

Manager “why is helping other people important?”

Staff “Because I want people to move forward with their lives, to have a good future

Manager “why is helping people move forward with their lives important to you?”

Staff “I want to feel that I have helped people to achieve something with their lives”

 

You have already stared to notice the thousands of ways you can use language to motivate your own team.

TOWARD MOTIVATION                                              

To motivate people who are Towards motivated use words, such as:

  • Attain
  • Gain
  • Achieve
  • Get
  • Include
  • Towards
  • Can’t wait to get there
  • Accomplish
  • Reward
  • End Result
  • Goals

Towards people are motivated to achieve or attain goals. They have trouble recognizing problems. They are good at managing priorities

AWAY-FROM MOTIVATION

To motivate people who are Away From motivated use words such as;

  • Avoid
  • Exclude
  • Recognize
  • Problem
  • Don’t like…
  • Trouble Shooting
  • Fix
  • Steer Clear of
  • Prevent
  • Solve
  • Fix
  • Prohibit

Away From people focus on what may be and is going wrong. They are motivated to solve problems and have trouble keeping focused on goals

Summary

 

A little goes a long way; as you read this article, many of you will be thinking do words really make a difference? They do and more importantly, words motivate people. As with many good techniques, you will agree you will need to practice, re-read this article and practice listening to your friends and colleagues language, you can probably already start noticing who is Towards or Away from motivated.

Once you recognise their motivational pattern, talk “using their language” and look for the difference your language is making; do they respond to you differently? Are they listening to your ideas and suggestions? Embedded Commands – Influencing your Colleagues and Managers

Imagine that you can master the art of using embedded commands to persuade others to follow your lead? Persuasion techniques are highly powerful, the issue isn’t how powerful these techniques are but how you can use them to improve your career prospects, if you could persuade others, how would this benefit your career?

Feel that excited feeling now, as you get ready to learn these highly powerful techniques.

It’s not about how powerful embedded commands are, it’s about how naturally you can use embedded commands to influence others, how many days are you willing to practice this technique to become an expert?

OK, on with the technique. You have read this far, you are interested in learning about embedded commands and you already know the importance of practicing these techniques so you can use it to naturally persuade others.

  • First you need to set up the embedded command; the set up is sometimes referred to as weasel phrases: Example:

“When you..”

“You can…”

“The more you…”

“You want to..”

“If you were to…”

There are hundreds to choose from, when you can come up with other ideas, write them down.

  • Second, you need to add the “Command.” Example:

“Feel….”

“Think about…”

“Imagine…”

“Notice…”

“Remember..”

Remember you can think of many more command words, as the command word pop’s into your head, write it down and try it out.

  • To finish of the embedded command, you need to end the sentence with a State, Process or Experience (SPE’s): Example:

“A change of mind”

“Excitement”

“That I am right”

“You agree”

“Joy”

As you are already aware there are many SPE’s you can use, imagine you can come up with 3 new SPE’s, what would they be?

I agree, as you read the breakdown of the technique not all of it will make sense, but it’s not about if the breakdown makes sense yet, it’s about how you can learn to put it all together. As you read these next examples you will start to understand embedded commands better then before.

“When you feel excited” –  Feel excited is the command

“How does it feel to know that I am the right person for the job?”  – I am the right person for the job is the embedded command

“The more you think about how you can offer me the job the more you will notice what added value I can offer”Offer me the job and notice what added value I can offer are both embedded commands.

For embedded commands to be effective you first need to gain excellent rapport and the embedded command has to go unnoticed by others, for maximum effectiveness change your tone of voice when giving the command and leave a small gap before and after the command. For embedded commands to work talk slow, a good embedded command will by pass the conscious mind and head straight for the unconscious mind.

  • When using embedded commands during job interviews, the interviewer, once you have used embedded commands will feel it was there idea to offer you the position.

You’re getting ready for your interview, feeling good then all of a sudden a voice in your head says “Your rubbish, you won’t pass this interview” or “how did you get an interview? You can’t even do this job”

Automatically this inner negative voice makes you feel like rubbish, the fear soon follows as your stomach feels like a great big dark hole. You start asking yourself “should I even bother attending this interview?”

 

 

 

Does this sound common to you? If it does, the following exercise will quickly and efficiently change how the inner voice affects you.

First you need to be aware that when we hear a voice in our head or as we create an image in our mind, the image or voice automatically creates a feeling; a negative voice or image creates a negative feeling and a positive voice or image creates a positive feeling.

Try it now; think of your last holiday, create an image of this picture and make it big and bright – if you feel good, your image was probably a positive image of your holiday, remembering all the good times, if you feel sad or negative the picture you can see probably resembles all the negative stuff that happened on your holiday.

How to get rid of your negative voice before an interview:

 

You may find it helpful to first read the exercise before trying it.

Let’s go back to the voice, recall this negative voice and as you hear the voice (this voice needs to sound like your voice, there is a different technique for a voice that sounds like someone else’s) notice, where the voice is? Is it on the left or the right hand side of your head? In the front or the back of your mind?

How loud is the voice? Normal, softer or louder – become aware of what make this voice negative?

If you could turn this voice into a shape, what shape would it be? A square, Triangle, Circle or any other shape? What shape is your voice? If you can’t turn the voice into a shape, imagine you were someone who could turn the voice into a shape – what is your shape is your voice?

What colour is your shape? Is the shape in the same place the voice was?

Slowly move the shape away from your head, down towards your shoulder, how does it feel now – most say it feels less powerful, amazing hey?

Allow the shape to move from your shoulder down your arm towards your elbow, how does it feel now, is the negative emotion vanishing? Yes?

Let the shape, continue further down from your elbow to your hand, notice how your negative emotions losses strength the future down the shape go’s, move the shape to your leg, at its own speed allow the shape to drop down from your leg to your knee – how does it feel now? Less powerful?

Move it from your knee to your foot, is the negative feeling vanishing?  With the shape on your foot, how do you feel, more positive?

Finally allow the shape to fall onto the floor – what do you want to do to the shape? Kick it away? Stamp on it? Put it under your chair?

Move the shape so you can’t see it, now how do you feel, have all the negative emotions vanished? Most said they vanished along time ago. How easy and amazing is this exercise?

  • Try this exercise 3 times and notice how it get’s easier and quicker to remove the negative voice each time you try it.

What do you want to achieve in your career? Is your current position and company helping you achieve your goal? If not, you need to look at what is missing, why you are experiencing a difficulty  or what you can improve to help align the different levels of your position to help you achieve your overall outcome.

The 6 NLP Logical Levels:                                                                               

Environment              – Where, When and With Whom?                                 

Behaviour                    – What are you doing?

Capabilities                 – How do you do that? How would you do that?

Beliefs and Values     – Why do you want that? Why is that important to you?

Identity                         – Who are you? Who were you?  Who do you want to be?

Spirituality                  – What for, or for Whom?

Step 1;           

What is your goal? If you have answered using an “away from” answer, example “to get out of my current company” re-word this to a “positive-towards goal” example “I want to work for an ethical company” write down your goal.

Answer each logical level in turn; first answer each set of questions thinking about your current role and situation, you will find it useful to record your answers.

Before moving to the next step, re-answer the same questions as if you were working in your ideal job role (this can be a new position in a new company or working in your current company, imagining that the job role and company was at its best) really imagine yourself enjoying your job role, see yourself there now, loving each working day. What can you see and hear? How does this feel? Write these answers down on a second piece of paper.

Step 2;            Environment                                                                       

How does your working environment affect your goal?

What are your external opportunities or constraints?

Where do you work best?

What kind of people do you like to have around you in your workplace?            

Where are your resources?

Where do you gain support from?

How does your working environment make you feel?                                  

Step 3.                        Behaviours                                                                     

What specifically do you do in your working day?

What do you do that makes work fun and interesting?                               

How do your behaviours affect your goal?

While at work, do you find yourself saying habitually? 

Can you see any patterns?                                                                                     

If I was you, what would I be doing?                                                                         

Do your actions fit in with your sense of who you are?

What do you sound like?                                                                                              

Step 4.                        Capabilities                                                                         

What skills, competency and knowledge do you have?                            

What skills have you learnt that you are proud of?                                               

What would people who know you well say you are good at?                  

Do you know someone who has the skills you’d like to have?                 

How do you know you are effective?                                                              

Is anything stopping you being your best?                                                    

Step 5.            Beliefs and Values                                                                        

 What do you believe and value?

Why do you believe and value that? 

What factors are important to you in your working situation?

What do you believe to be right and wrong?

What has to be true for you to get what you want?

What are your beliefs about your working situations? Are they helpful?

What beliefs might be help me you get better results?                                  

Step 6.                        Identity                                                                              

What is the definition of who you are and what you stand for?              

What kind of person are you?                                                                                    

How is what you are experiencing an expression of who you are?             

How would you describe yourself in work?                                                        

How would others describe you?                                                                             

Step 7.            Spirituality                                                                                      

What is your meaning in life?

For what reason are you here?

What would you like your contribution to be to others?

 How would you like to be remembered when you’re gone?

Now, compare your answers from both your current job role and your possible future job position.                                                       

What have you noticed?

What is different between your current job role list and your future job role list?

What can you change in your current situation to turn this into your ideal situation?

Have your beliefs or values changed?

Would it be helpful to change any of your belief, values or identity?

What Step (or logical level) did you find most interesting?

Do you feel more positive now that you have completed this exercise?

What small or large changes will you make to help you achieve your goal and outcome?

If you could take one piece of learning that would help you achieve your goal, from this exercise, what would it be?

What will you do differently tomorrow?
